RIB Boat Rental Guide for First-Time Visitors
RIBs (rigid inflatable boats) are the workhorse of the Aegean for a reason: they’re fast, stable in chop, easy to beach, and forgiving for newer captains. If you’re considering renting one for the first time, here’s a practical guide.
Do you need a licence?
For boats above a certain engine power (usually 30 HP in Greek waters), yes — you’ll need a valid recreational boating licence. Bring the original document; a photo isn’t always accepted at check-in.
Read the wind, not the forecast app
The meltemi can pick up fast in July and August. A calm 09:00 can be a 4-Beaufort headwind by 14:00. Plan the longer crossings for early in the day, and have a sheltered backup cove in mind.
Fuel: more than you think
RIB engines are thirstier at planing speed than at displacement speed. The most common rookie mistake is racing everywhere at 25 knots — you’ll burn through your tank twice as fast. Cruise around 18-20 knots and you’ll have a much longer day.
Snorkel gear is included
Most of our RIB rentals come with masks and fins on board — but bring your own if you have a favourite. The bays around the Dodecanese reward anyone willing to put their face in the water for ten minutes.
